Casperia is a fortified medieval village in the Sabine Hills
in the province of Rieti. Built on top a rocky hill and surrounded
by mountains and deep valleys, the village commands a wonderful
view of the Umbria/Latium Appenines. Although the name comes
from a preroman city cited in Virgil (Aeniad VII,714)and by
Silio Italico, the village was actually founded between the
x and the XI centuries with the name Aspra. It lost this name
as late as 1947 as a result of a village council decision harking
back to a scholarly tradition whereby Aspra was linked to the
ancient city of Casperia. There are still various important
Roman remains in the parish. The remains of country villas can
be seen.
